Reiter Grand Concert Internal Resonator Chubby Dragon
This banjo is no longer for sale (sold on 2008-10-02)
Price : US $1,800.
One the of rarest Reiter banjos and a real beauty! This one has it all, the internal resonator, Bacon ring, and the chubby dragon!
This banjo is from the 1980's, I believe, and has a really nice patina. Bob Smakula refinished and french polished the peghead to preserve the inlay. There are a few dings here and there. but nothing major. The first couple of frets show some wear, as shown in the pictures, but there is no buzzing and it plays cleanly up the neck. Bart likes to use a nitrocellulose finish that develops age crackles. These are evident mostly on the resonator. Nice touch, in my opinion. Bart makes very comfortable necks and this is one of those.
As expected, it has that Bacon tone. Forward, but not harsh, it won't get lost in a jam. If you are looking for thumpy, this is not the banjo for you.
It is somewhat brighter than a Whyte Laydie to my ear, but nowhere near a bluegrass banjo.
The pot is 11 inches across and 2 1/2 deep, with a a fiberskin head. The nut is 1 1/4 and the scale is 26 1/8. It has five-star tuners, probably original.
It comes with the original hard case, and can be seen in Atlanta.
What's up with the starting bid of $49? Well, I believe that the market will determine the value of this banjo. Bart doesn't make these any more, but I've
been told that when he did, they were almost $3000. I suspect that this banjo will sell for a fair wholesale price and that is fine with me. I'm knee deep
in nice banjos at the moment and this one needs to find a nice home.
