You are bidding on a circa 1890 Cole Eclipse, serial #597. This instrument is one of the first Eclipse banjos made by Cole after his 1890 split with A.C. Fairbanks. It is the rare Bird inlay pattern. Instrument is in good-excellent condition. Neck was polished but not refinished. Frets are original with only the slightest wear. Pegs are replacements. These are geared ''Pegs-hed'' pegs that look exactly like ebony friction pegs but are geared to hold tuning well. Original pegs were standard type used by all the manufacturers of the day. Originals are readily available and inexpensive if you wish to switch. The ''Pegs-hed'' fit the old holes; the holes were not reamed larger, they are original. You will want to use the ''Pegs-hed'' that are in it now. Tail piece is original as is Eclipse tone ring. There are two hooks missing. These are rare, but available. There is a fresh skin head expertly installed. The neck has been re-set and action is excellent. This is a collector and a player. Pot dowel stick and fixtures are original. Rim shows a little flaking of finish on bottom of rim as per pictures. A true collectors item. GOOD LUCKOn Sep-23-08 at 16:21:01 PDT, seller added the following information:
Several bidders have requested wood rim size - 11 3/8'' diameter. Also, if you want to go online to banjoonmyknee, you will find #337 bird Eclipse and lots of history and
