Well, I must be maturing as a banjo player because I've hit a milestone. I'm offering for sale my first real ''splurge'' banjo, an Alvarez 4280. I purchased this banjo used about 2 years ago from a reputable store. According to a source at the former St. Louis Music Supply company, the sole importer of Alvarez banjos, this is probably from the 1980's. After I purchased it I took it to a professional luthier to have it checked out and set up. This particular banjo has a nice tone and good volume. As with most 4280's it is a resonator banjo with a single coordinating rod. Physically, the banjo is in good shape. The frets, fretboard, peghead, tuners, tailpiece, rim and flange are in fantastic condition. In regards to the sound, I've played several 4280s and I can honestly say that this one has the best tone and volume of any that I've played.
Whenever I sell anything on Ebay I try to provide enough pictures and describe the object exactly as it is. Consequently, I want to be sure to point out that there is a blemish (maybe from a buckle) on the neck of the banjo, one small screw is missing on the faceplate for the tension rod, and while the chrome parts really shine, there is some tarnishing on some of the hooks. I have tried to include pictures of each of these. None of these affect the sound or quality of the instrument.
