Long neck banjos are rare and hard to find. This is a 1970s Pirles model made in the Philipines. The name Pirles is a gold-colored plate that looks to be riveted on. It has an aluminum rim and a mahogany resonator. The neck is mahogany as well. It has geared guitar-style tuners, except the fifth string peg is a friction peg. The neck has been reset, because when we got this banjo the screw holding the neck in place was broken and the neck swayed back and forth. Also, one of the little white plastic grommet rings is not original, because it was missing (the top right one). It has new D'Addario strings, which seem to be the only strings long enough for a long neck banjo. There is a sticker on the back of the peghead that reads FB-5R. It has a rosewood fretboard with what appear to be mother-of-pearl dot inlays and the bridge appears to be some sort of light Philipine rosewood. It has a wooden armrest, which is typical of early seventies Asian banjos. Most companies stopped using wooden armrests before 1975. This banjo is tuned to an open ''E'' rather than open ''G'', but the fifth string is still a G. Basically, it has three extra frets up top and can still be played like a normal banjo when a capo is put on. It's a lot of fun and it makes playing in a lower key like E easier for the banjo picker. This banjo does not have a case, as cases to fit these banjos are hard to find and therefore a little pricey. It does, however, come securely packaged in the original box, which is worn, like you would expect in a cardboard box from the '70s. This will also be placed in a larger box with plenty of stuff
