Up for bids is this wonderful Gibson Mastertone Style 3 Tenor Banjo in very nice condition overall. Includes original purple-lined hardshell case pictured in photos. This piece dates from 1925, the first year of Mastertone production. Mastertones from 1925 are readily indentifiable by two features unique to that year: The original heavy brass Lloyd Loar-designed ball-bearing tone ring assembly with holes on the outside skirt and the Mastertone logo appears on the peghead inlaid in small individual letters rather than on the fingerboard engraved in a mother of pearl block.
This instrument conforms to standard Gibson catalog specifications for the style 3 of the time with maple neck and resonator, single white binding on the fingerboard and and back edge of the resonator, two-piece flange, nickel plating, Grover patent presto tailpiece (with a hole punched for a fifth string), fiddle-shaped peghead, diamonds and squares inlay, and Brazilian rosewood fingerboard. The vintage heavy nickel-plating gives all the hardware on this instrument an unmistakeable deep silvery lustre which you canâ€™t get with modern plating processes. Original dark reddish-brown finish on maple neck and maple resonator; some wear from use and age. A bit of wear also to armrest. The only issues with this banjo are:
