Alvarez Whyte Eagle Archtop 5 String Banjo Model 4310
This banjo is no longer for sale (sold on 2009-12-08)
Price : US $1,000.
I really hate to part with this but I need money and I no longer play it. I've had it for around 15 years.
It's a great banjo with an archtop tone ring which gives a more crisp sound than the traditional flat-top. It also has a Gibson style tube and plate flange and eagle claw tailpiece. I added a Shubb 5th string capo and a cradle strap.
It's in excellent condition. The wood finish is great. The metal parts need a good cleaning. Includes hardshell case.
The last time I saw one of these sell on eBay was 1 to 3 years ago and it brought $1200. The only one I can find for sale now is from this dealer that's asking $2225 for it:
There is a decent writeup on Alvarez banjos at the link below. If you scroll down to the 4310 section the last one he describes matches mine with the exception of the eagle claw tailpiece on mine. The label on the inside of mine shows the model number but for some reason there is no serial number on it.
The wood and finish are all great with some minor scratches on the back of the resonator from belt buckles, etc.
The nickel or chrome (I'm not sure which) plating is dirty, mostly dust and fingerprints, and needs to be cleaned but it won't take much to clean it. But this is the one possible flaw in this banjo. For some reason the plated parts are a bit rough, meaning they look as though they may not have been polished enough before they were plated and/or the plating
