WHAT IS IT?
This was built by
Oscar Schmidt out of New Jersey in the 1920s, and is unmarked, but
identical to a number of other tenors I've worked on that bore the
''Stella'' brand name and were of the same vintage. OS sold instruments
under the Stella name (it was one of their in-house names) in that
period. It's entirely original save for a missing tailpiece cover, new
bridge, and two new hook/nut/shoes. The head is more than likely
original and it shows some definite playwear.
I've disassembled it, cleaned it up, put it back together, and set it
up to play like a champ, which it does. Quick neck, easy action, nice
tone, with a warm rich bottom end -- especially in ''Celtic'' (GDAE)
tuning, which it's set up with at the moment. Listen to the clip!
