What a rare find indeed: an ORIGINAL, Gold Star flathead GF-200 Hearts and Flowers model banjo, serial number 85.7.36, in outstanding, near mint condition. I bought this new from a venerable acoustic instrument dealer in town. Gold Star banjos, along with Stellings, were the Gold Standard for banjo quality in the 70s and early 80s, until they were discontinued. At the time, Gibson's quality had slipped, and many professional and amateur pickers who did not have access to vintage instruments chose Gold Stars because of their uncompromising quality and superior sound. Constructed basically like a pre-war gibson, with their own take on a ''vintage prewar flathead'' tonering, these old Gold Star flatheads, along with their archtop brothers, are great instruments and sound as good as any modern Gibson mastertone.
This particular model is the creme-de-la-creme of the Gold Star line. Although it lacks the (frankly lackluster) gold plating of the JD Crowe model, this model more than makes up for it with the beautiful, vintage sunburst curly maple neck and resonator. Take a close look at the pic... that is a ONE PIECE, not a bookmatched, resonator. Every picture I've seen of this model has a bookmatched resonator, with an annoying line down the back where the wood was split into two pieces. This is one solid, beautiful piece of wood. The color is amazing; warm and rich, just like the tone of the instrument. The neck features the Granada style Hearts and Flowers, with no inlay from the 1
