This is a custom Lancaster model banjo, handmade by Steve Huber of Huber banjos, and is in excellent condition. For anyone who doesn't know, Steve Huber is making the finest prewar style banjos that money can buy. I custom ordered this particular instrument because I wanted a banjo that closely replicated the sound, construction, and appearance of the signature instrument of my favorite banjo player, JD Crowe.
This banjo basically looks like a Gibson RB-75 Flying Eagle. It features a beautiful red-brown mahogany neck and resonator that are just the most gorgeous straight grained mahogany I've ever seen. Who needs figure when the quality of the wood is this high. The binding and concentric rings of purfling in the resonator are treated with some sort of aging toner to make them look vintage, as is the binding of the neck. What's really cool is what he did to the inlay on the peghead. Somehow, he applied vintage toner to the lacquer, and the result is that it looks, well, old. Which is how I wanted it to look of course. Because even though Huber banjos sound old, stock Lancaster models have white binding and don't look like they're 75 years old. And if you're like me, and can't afford a 75 year old Gibson, you can at least get the next best thing.
The peghead, incidentally, is not the Huber shape, but is the classic Double-cut shape used on Gibson style 3, 4, and Granadas of the prewar era. It also features ivoroid buttons and Keith pegs on the 2nd and 3rd strings
